Hojicha powder is our strong-roast hojicha (Taiyo) milled to a fine powder, so you drink the whole leaf instead of steeping it. It dissolves in hot water or straight into milk, which makes it the easiest way to a hojicha latte at home: 2 g, milk, done. Caramel-sweet, toasty and low in caffeine, from first-harvest spring leaf grown in Kizugawa, Kyoto.
Not roasted matcha
Matcha is shaded, unroasted tencha; hojicha powder is roasted sencha-grade leaf ground fine. The farm roasts its spring first flush rather than coarse autumn leaf, so the powder is sweet and smooth and has none of the ashy edge of cheap hojicha. Because roasting breaks down much of the caffeine, a hojicha latte is a drink you can have at 9 pm.
Taste
Caramel, toasted grain, cocoa, a soft smokiness and a naturally sweet finish. In milk it tastes like a gentle, less bitter cousin of a mocha.
How to use it
Hot tea: 1 g (half a teaspoon) in 200 ml of hot water, stir. Latte: 2 g whisked with 30 ml of hot water, then 200 ml of hot or iced milk; oat milk works very well. Ice shake: ice, 2 g of powder and cold water or milk in a bottle, shake 20 seconds. Sparkling: dissolve 2 g in a splash of water, top with soda, add honey or a slice of yuzu or lemon. Baking: fold into whipped cream, chiffon cake, cookies, panna cotta or ice cream.
Good to know
30 g makes about 30 cups of tea or 15 lattes; 100 g makes 50 lattes. Roughly 10–15 mg of caffeine per 1 g serving. Store airtight and away from light; use within three months of opening.
From Morii Farm, Kizugawa, Kyoto
Every tea in our online shop comes from one farm. Morii Farm is a small family farm in Kizugawa, in the hills of southern Kyoto Prefecture next to the Kizu River, run by Masakazu and Tomomi Morii, the fourth generation on this land. The slopes are steep and the gap between day and night temperatures is wide, which slows the leaves down and concentrates their sweetness. Since 2017 the fields have been managed without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, herbicides or animal manure; the only fertilizer is natural rapeseed cake. This is the farm's own practice, not a certification, and it is the reason our teahouse in Tallinn carries the family name.
Frequently asked questions
What is hojicha powder?
Roasted Japanese green tea ground into a fine powder. Unlike loose hojicha, you consume the whole leaf, so the flavour is stronger per gram and it mixes straight into milk.
Is hojicha powder the same as matcha?
No. Matcha is shaded, unroasted leaf and is bright green with 60–70 mg of caffeine per bowl. Hojicha powder is roasted leaf, brown, caramel-flavoured and low in caffeine. It is sometimes called “hojicha matcha”, but it is not matcha.
How do I make a hojicha latte?
Whisk 2 g of powder with 30 ml of hot water until smooth, add 200 ml of hot milk and sweeten if you like. For iced: shake powder, cold milk and ice in a bottle. No whisk needed; a small milk frother or a jar with a lid is enough.
How much caffeine is in hojicha powder?
Roughly 10–15 mg per 1 g serving and 20–30 mg in a 2 g latte, compared with about 90 mg in a filter coffee. Low enough for the evening for most people.
How much hojicha powder per cup?
1 g for a cup of hot tea, 2 g for a latte, 2 g for sparkling hojicha, 3–5 g for baking.
Does hojicha powder expire?
Best within a year unopened and within three months after opening. It does not spoil, but it loses aroma; keep it sealed and away from light and heat.
Can I drink hojicha powder during pregnancy?
A latte has about 20–30 mg of caffeine, far below the 200 mg daily limit the European Food Safety Authority advises in pregnancy. Ask your doctor if you are unsure.
Can I bake with it?
Yes. It behaves like matcha in recipes: whipped cream, chiffon cake, cookies, cheesecake, panna cotta. Use 3–5 g per batch and taste as you go.
How fast does it ship, and what does delivery cost?
Orders ship within 24 hours from Tallinn, Estonia. Estonia: Omniva parcel locker €2.95, free from €50. Latvia and Lithuania: €4.95–5.95. Finland: Matkahuolto €7.95. Elsewhere in the EU: free shipping from €75. Pickup at Morii Teahouse, Kopli 16, Tallinn (Mon–Sat 12–21, Sun 12–20) is usually ready the same day, and you can taste the tea before you take it home.
